Five Thousand and Counting

Earlier today (or yesterday I should say since it is now 1 am), I crossed the 5,000 subscriber mark on YouTube.  I am truly delighted and humbled by this milestone.  It’s been quite a road.  I added my first video, Sabers, to YouTube on October 28, 2006.  I was virtually unknown on YouTube for over two years.  As of now, I have 268 videos, 1.4 million accumulative views and 5,000 subscribers.  It’s an honor and I want to thank all of you fans out there.  Whether you watch my tutorials, movies or both, I have reached this milestone because of you!  Thank you!

My YouTube channel as of September 3, 2010.

Moving forward, I promise I will continue to produce the best content I can.  And trust me, there’s a lot to look forward to!

Sabers III Cast

The Sabers III cast has been set!  Matt Neiman will be playing the protagonist of the film, an escaped prisoner fighting for his life.  Meanwhile, Damian Winter will play the Guard who pursues the Prisoner.  The film is set to be a spiritual remake of the first in the series, utilizing a simple plot with a focus on combat.

The film is well into pre-production and is set to start shooting on September 25th.  I’ll add more details as they develop.

Over four years ago I was editing video on a pretty antiquated PC (running Windows XP).  To be honest I really don’t remember the specs, but they weren’t stellar and editing was a slow process.  I was using Pinnacle Studio and a piece of software called ALAMDV 2 to do most of my editing.  While things were OK in the editing department, my computer ran slow and crashed a lot.  This seemed to always be a problem with me, ever since Windows 98.  What was the deal?  I was always careful with my internet browsing, performed disk defrags routinely and other Windows management practices.  But no matter what, after a couple months of use the compter would slowly start to degrade in performance.  Maybe I just suck at computers, I dunno.

Sabers was edited on my old PC. That film was a pretty big achievement for me at the time.

I then heard of this company called Apple, perhaps you’ve heard of them? :P  Anyway, their computers were supposed to be rock solid and made for video editing and other design work.  Final Cut Studio was of course the big deal breaker when it came to video.  So, while the computer had a steep price, I purchased a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro.  Now I could do video editing on the move!  Yay!

Well, the computer has worked well over these four years.  I really like Final Cut, and I’ve never had any major problems computer-wise.  I’m also a fan of Apple’s operating system.  However, my MacBook Pro is getting older now.  There are way faster computers out there, not to mention the 2GB of ram doesn’t go as far as it used to.  Hard drive space is also an issue and for a serious video editor, a laptop isn’t probably the top choice.  Also, if you know anything about Macs, you’ll know that it’s hard to upgrade these computers due to the closed nature of their manufacturing.  This laptop has servered me well but it was time to take the next leap.

My first instinct was to look to Apple again.  However, as I examine their prices, and even as a satisified Mac user… it’s just hard to justify.  I know the arguements: you pay for quality hardware, the superior operating system and reliability (and in my case Final Cut), but if this really the case anymore?  I hear great things about Windows 7, it sounds like things have come along way since Windows XP (I was absent during the Vista era), you can get way, way more bang for you buck if you go the PC route in terms of power and with the introduction of the Adobe CS5 Suite, I am hearing excellent things about Premiere.  I have never used Premiere, always stuck with Final Cut, but with Adobe’s tight intergration between programs, 64 bit processing and so on… Adobe really makes an inticing offer.  Flash CS5, while a worthy upgrade, wasn’t enough of a reason to upgrade my Creative Suite but now with Premiere, my mind has changed.  Flash, After Effects and Premiere making sweet, sweet love together.  Now that’s something worth paying money for.

They may be expensive as hell... but they're sure sexy.

So, after careful thought, I ordered a custom built PC.  It’s loaded with Windows 7, a new i7 processor, lots of ram and a screaming video card.  The kicker is spec wise, it’s over double the strength of a Mac that is almost $1000 more.  So even after upgrading to the new CS5 suite, I’ll still come out ahead with a PC in terms of money.

Will I regret my purchase?  Should I have stuck with Apple?  Will I fall in love with Windows 7?  All of this will be answered soon when my computer arrives.  I will write a follow up article when that happens.

LearnKey Flash CS5 Promo Now Online!

The promo for the new Flash CS5 learning series I did for LearnKey is now online.  I think they did a great job with putting it all together.  It almost makes me look cool :P

Check it out!

I have posted a new tutorial on how to interchange assets between your different Flash project files.  This is great if you have a series of projects that share artwork or maybe you have a large file you would rather not open, but still would like to grab files from.

Sabers III Early Title Design

Damian Winter, the Director of Photography for Sabers III sent this picture over to me tonight.  I really like the design and thinks it fits the style and feel of the film.  Take a look!

Sabers III Pre-Production Photos

For over a year now I have been developing a new short film entitled Sabers III.  It’s been a long road, but it looks like the film is finally ready to enter production.  So, what is Sabers III?  Well, it’s the third entry (I bet you would’ve never guessed that) in a series of short films that I started in early 2005.  While each movie shares the “Sabers” title, they actually don’t relate to each other plot-wise.  With Sabers III we are hoping to improve on the forumla the first movie established.

Damain Winter, the DP for the project, has been working on some demo effects.  Below are a few shots I would like to share.  Keep in mind these photos were from an early location scout we were doing and don’t reflect what the final movie will look like.

The New IncredibleTutorials.com is Here!

The new website design for IncredibleTutorials.com is online.  My hope is that this new design will provide a more streamlined interface and allow you to get where you’re going a lot quicker.  The old design was OK, but I always felt it was a bit unintuitive.  So, hopefully you will enjoy this new design.  Check it out!

It’s Coming…

The new IncredibleTutorials site is coming.  Yes, it will completely change the way you view life as we know it.  Well, maybe not, but I think most of you will find the design to be a nice change.  Here is a sneak peak:

Did you feel that?  Don’t be afraid, it was just the chill of awesome that ran through your spine.  Or maybe it was something else but I’ll let you figure that one out on your own.

It’s coming very soon, so sit tight!
